A million years ago a well seasoned vw bug mechanic showed me how to rap a tapered shaft free. Of course, this was in the day of either forged or cast steel control arms, not the aluminum stuff we have now. However, if you still have a bit of Zen left in you, you can carefully try this procedure.
Remove the nut from the shaft first. Then with one hand, securely place the head of a heavy ball peen hammer flat up against the bottom of the protruding shaft. With the other hand, sharply (with as much force as you think the component will withstand)rap the top of the control arm (or whatever assembly you're dealing with)with another hammer. Usually, the shock wave generated by the blow, as well as the upoward pressure from the bottom hammer will break the tapered shaft free. Tjis is a crude method, but I have used it with success many times in the past. Just have to be careful though.
