Yes you can do this your self. No you do not need a vacuum pump in most cases, and you often do not need guages.
If the system is low, there will still probably be some pressure, therefore the system will not be contaminated with air.
The amount to add can be judged by the site glass and the temperatures of the pipes.
No you should not do this if you are not comfortable with it. Yes, read the instructions that come with whatever kit you get.
Yes it will likely leak out again. But you will know that the controls and compressor are or are not the root cause.
If you have a leak that takes a couple of years to cause problems, then this might be a good solution.
You may still need to get the dealer to take care of things. But adding refrigerant in your driveway is not something that should be totally rejected.
