If you are comfortable around cars, you can do many items on the 65,000 mile check-up list yourself. Problems found now can save you from spending a lot more money later on. A good dealer or independent SAAB mechanic should be able to complete the entire list of items, and give you a list of any other items that may need to be serviced in the near future, for around $300-$500 dollars.
These are the items that need replaced or serviced at 65,000 miles:
Change engine oil and filter
Change brake fluid and bleed system.
Replace engine air cleaner element.
Replace spark plugs.
Replace cabin ventilation air filter.
Inspect/Replace serpentine belt. Inspect/Replace drive belt tensioner and pulleys.
Flush the cooling system and refill with new coolant.
Clean battery case, battery terminal connections, and check battery water level.
Check transmission fluid level.
Inspect brake calipers and brake pads, noting pad thickness, while tires are off.
Check front wheel alignment, toe-in only. If out of specification, perform front-end alignment.
These items are the items that need to be checked at 65,000 miles:
Rotate tires and inspect tires for uneven wear.
Check tire pressure and tread depth.
Check spare tire pressure.
Check wiper blades and clean glass.
Test windshield washer system; top-up fluid.
Check exterior lights.
Check engine cooling system, hoses, and cap.
Inspect brake hoses and brake lines.
Inspect exhaust system.
Check fuel system including tank for leaks and damage.
Inspect rubber boots for inner and outer drive shaft joints.
Check ball joints, steering joints, and rubber boots.
Lubricate door hinges, stops, and locks and check operation.
Check headlight, fog light aim.
Check SRS warning lamp, visual inspection
Check safety belts for operation, visual inspection for tears and fraying.
Check ball joint clearance, outer and inner steering joints, and rubber boots.
Inspect shock absorbers and bushings for tightness and condition.
Road test. Check performance of drive train, steering, and brakes, and verify tire balance. Check function of instruments and controls, including horn, windshield wipers, cruise control, and climate system. Note any noises or problems for correction.
