Before you take it to some dealer that hits you with a bill for $1000 for a new compressor try the following.
Look at the compressor (which is below the water pump) and you'll see a blue wire that goes into a temp sensor then comes back out and goes into the compressor itself. Disconnect the wire coming out of the sensor and into the compressor. Start the car, turn on the A/C, and jump the compressor STRAIGHT TO THE BATTERY. If the compressor comes on then there is a problem "upstream" that can be very simple to fix!
There have been a lot of temp sensor failures on the compressor and it's just a $50 part that screws into the side (but doesn't penetrate the compressor itself). You don't need to discharge the A/C system to replace it but you do have to remove the lower radiator hose.
Other electrical culprits upstream of the compressor include the wiring (of course), the fuses/relays in the engine compartment fuse box and the A/C pressure sensor next to the receiver/drier which will stop the compressor from running when the freon charge is low.
Good luck and let us know what it turns out to be!
