There is a motor located in the trunk that is responsible for raising this cover. It is not directly attached to the gears but has a release mechanism (which is activated by pulling a red handle behind back seat). In my case in normal operational state my mechanism was not pushing the motor all the way to the gears and when you tried rasing the cover the motor would gring against the gears which resulted in the ratching noise and cover not opening up whithout external help. The solution was simple. Open up you trunk. The motor is going to be on the right side facing the front of the car. You would have to take down the cover to expose it. After that I just took some wire and put it tight around the motor and the gears. This way the motor always stays attached to the gears and you can't deattach even with red lever but the roof works perfectly.
