Yes you can clean the engine. Yes you MUST be very careful. In the earlier years of the NG900 (94, 95) Saab used a less environmentally sealed connector than in later years (actually something Good from GM!). In the earlier cars, people would wash the interior of the engine compartment, and water would get into the ABS controller. This caused two problems - potential damage to the ABS controller, and a malfunctioning speedometer and odometer. That's because the ABS controller sends the wheel speed signal to the odo and speedo. Folks would wash their cars, and the speedo would be pegged, and the odo would be clicking off miles like the starship Enterprise. They could run up thousands of miles just driving to the dealership. As noted, some folks ruined their ABS controllers - others were luck, and the ABS controller was OK, and they just got a few extra thousand miles on the odo.
This isn't urban legend. I heard this directly from John Moss during the recent Brake Seminar. John runs the Saab technician training center, and if anyone knows what's going on out there, it's him.
Now, you have a later car, so you should have the better connectors. But I would not use high pressure water of any kind. I wouldn't use the spray nozzle on a garden hose. I would soap things down, and let water FLOW over surfaces to rinse them. Never spray at anything, because no matter how careful you are, all it takes is a slip to hit a connector with a stream of water. So just let it flow, and you should be OK.
