A weird radio problem, and a weirder solution

Brought my 96 SET to a mechanic for a first in-depth look post-purchase. When he was checking the engine, the radio lost the code (which it had done before, during the pre-purchase check). The sequence of events that followed:
1. Put the code back in-no response (the four digits light up on display, antennta goes up/down but nothing operates).
2. Try to reset by pressing on BAND button as per manual-doesn't respond.
3. Disconnect the battery-display dies.
4. Reconnect the battery-display asks for the code.
5. Repeat 1, above
6. Repeat 2, above.
7. Mechanic (I was still at the shop) looks into the fuse compartment, pulls out Fuse 11 (identified on lid as "radio"), puts it back in-no response.
8. I suggest he repeat 7 with Fuse 13 (identified on lid as "radio/diagnostics"). He does, and the radio starts working.
I seriously doubt that somebody else will find this useful but, with the car that quirky, who knows?
As an aside, the mechanic (Roland of Swedish Saab in Brooklyn) left a good impression. I asked him to look into the idiot light (CHECK ENGINE). He suggested it was due to poor vacuum so he replaced the hoses and charged less than initially quoted. The light went back on next day but I resolved to ignore it for a while.
