I know that this has been discussed before. I am posting this more for the information of new people on this BB. The Saab 2.0L Turbo-charged engine is a high output, highly sophisticated engine with pretty much state of the art electronic controls. As such it is programmed to dial back on performance when a less than ideal engine condition is detected. There are some easy maintenance items that the DIY (Do It Yourself) owner can perform to keep the engine performance at peak capacity. Doing these few items along with checking tire pressures, regular oil and filter changes, and topping off the other engine fluids, will reward you with plenty of performance on demand driving.

Use brand name Premium Fuel. While the Saab 2.0L turbo engine will run on lower octane fuel, the engine computer will compensate by lowering the available power based on air temperature, engine temperature, knock sensing, fuel octane, etc.

Use a good fuel system cleaner every 5-10,000 miles. The cheaper fuel additives are mainly kerosene type solvents instead of the more expensive and more effective fuel system detergents. I have had good results with Chevron “Techron Concentrate”, but the best fuel system cleaner I have found is “Redline Complete Fuel System Cleaner”. I use 1 oz. of Redline Complete Fuel System Cleaner per gallon of gasoline in a full tank of fuel twice a year, in the spring and in the fall. Don’t refuel until the tank is a at ¼ tank or less to let the cleaner do its job.
Change the spark plugs every 15,000 miles and use only NGK spark plugs. Based on your diving habits either BCPR6ES (slightly ‘hotter’ plug for mainly city driving or colder climates) or BCPR7ES (cooler plug for high speed driving, towing, or hot climates).

Change the standard engine air cleaner every 15,000 miles, or use a K&N filter. Do not use a cone type filter without a cold air intake.

Check the engine vacuum hoses for splits/deterioration/leaks often. Replace any worn or brittle hoses with new tubing, or better yet silicone tubing.
