need help with diagnosing my cruise control...

I have a 95 900S (116,000 miles). About a month ago cruise was not working. I'd click the switch on, light shows up, I'd feel vacuum but it would not hold speed. After a few weeks, light would come on and nothing would happen. Then I replaced the vac hose that connects from cc mod to throttle body and occasionally get vacuum but still does not hold but now I hear a clicking noise near the throttle when I push the button in. Where else do I check for a vac leak? Is it the cable or mod unit? Someone told me to check the switches near clutch and brake pedal but it is hard for me to look up there. I will eventually take it to get fixed if I can't figure it out. Thanks for any help!
