Clutch Pedal Spring - Help?!

OK - I finally got around to the preventative maintenance of replacing the clutch cable on my 1995 900S. At some point I unhooked the spring on the clutch pedal and I can't get it back on. I've re-assembled everything else, and the vehicle runs well with the new cable. But, this spring is hanging there.
Any hints on how it goes back on? It doesn't have to go on before the end of the clutch cable is hooked on does it? Also - what does it do, really? The pedal feels good without it attached.
Shaun
