Out of Round Tire or Dented Rim" Posted by SLAAB [Email] (#1275) [Profile/Gallery] (more from SLAAB) on Wed, 30 May 2001 15:33:59 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi,
I have 40,000 mi on the original Michelins that came with my '97 900 turbo with about 1/16" rubber left to the wear bar. When driving at slow speed, a slight vibration can be felt (like a hump-hump but no sound). The car is rock stable when driving at high speed and the vibration is less noticable.
Given that the vibration is more noticable at slow speed, I'm thinking that the tire surface is not perfectly round. I've eyeballed the tires and have observed even wear for the most part.
So is there a low cost way to tell if it is the tire that is out of round or a dent in the rim? I'm still hurting from the stock market slide so I'd like to avoid buying new rims if I can help it. Likewise I'd hate to take it to a tire shop to put on a Hunter diagnostic machine when the shop stands to make more money selling me a rim.
Thanx
