The radios are made by different vendors, the NGs were Clarion and I think the 9-3s were Pioneer, so the pinouts might be different.
Also, the 9-3s have this 'marrying' thing where many of the components are keyed to the car (although I don't know if the head unit is one of them...I know T-7 ECUs and the CD changers for 9-3s require a ceremony performed by a Tech2).
