car stalls with cold start up, no dash lights help!

My 1995 900 S (117,700 miles) recently started stalling in am and would then restart with no problems. The central warning light came on with the chime and temporary check engine light when it cut out. The car runs fine and no check engine light at all but I noticed that the instrument lights controlled by the dimmer switch don't work. I checked my fuses (#29 too) and they are fine. I had my alternator and battery tested and they were good. Is this just a bulb or the rheostat? What would make my car stall? Do you think it is a loose wire or short? Help! I'm driving my husband crazy with this problem, thanks!
