Had new Harmonic balancer and belts installed ($400) 3 weeks ago and everything ran fine. Started car one morning last week and heard a new noise up at the passenger side firewall, kind of a low, deep "knocka-knocka" sound. It went away as the car warmed up and a 200 mile weekend trip was uneventful. With further use, the noise at start up is there and a moan or whine seems to be growing on the road despite warm up.

Noise is engine speed dependent, not road speed dependent (coasting with clutch in and engine idling - no noise). Oddly, when I stick my head under the hood, I don't hear the same noise as when inside the car. For the past two years the PS system moans in severe cold weather until warm and system lost some fluid, never did figure out if it was the rack or the pump, just watched the fluid level and waited for spring without any harm. Last year's mild winter (SE NY) presented no noises/problems at all.

I figure the tension of the new belts has caused the pump bearings to go, or else the idler pully is going. There are no adverse symptoms with the power steering use during a drive, no squeeling or other distress noises.

Does this sound like a failing pump?

I read the Bently and it looks relatively easy to replace (yeah, I know). Should I buy a SAAB pump or generic, or get a used pump from a salvage yard. What should this cost for part alone or if a shop installs it?

Or is it the dreaded ....... something else?

Car is 1992 900S 5SP with 160,000 miles, so far trouble free, but I'm in that zone where stuff like this begins to add up.

Thanks in advance.
