There are actually several aspects to this problem. Of course all the factory techs agree that there is something wrong until they can not solve it, which is when it becomes "normal".
When the car was new, no matter what the ambient temperature was when I started the car the engine idle speed was nailed at 1,000 rpm. Then at around 30,000 miles I began to notice a gradual increase in idle speed at cold startup to about 1350 rpm. Sometimes the engine speed will immediately shoot to 2,000 rpm. After several minutes of driving the idle speed will return to 1,000 rpm but not at a uniform rate. After driving and allowing the engine to achieve normal temperature, when the throttle is released throttle the engine speed decreases linearly at one rate to 1,300 rpm and hangs there for approximate 15 seconds at which point it decreases at another, much slower rate to 1,000 rpm.
Even when the ambient temperature is in excess of 85F the car starts and the engine speed shoots to 1,500 rpm. It's embarrasing leaving the parking lot in a $30,000 dollar car with the "choke" stuck. My co-workers (engineers) get a real kick out of that.
Also, lately I have been noticing some detonation off idle. I am using Sunoco 94 octane and it still occurs. I can only detect it at lower speeds because at higher speeds I believe road noise is masking it. I have a very sensitive ear for these noises and I'm sure that if I brought it to the dealership they would tell me that I'm hearing things. I'm not!
Here is a primitive graph of my engine speed characteristics upon trailing throttle; Vertical is engine speed, horizontal is time.

I should add that when the car had around 10,000 miles I performed several high speed runs in excess of 140 mph. I did this approximately 5 times and each one lasted for approximately 2 miles.
Any insights will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jerry
