That was me, but it wasn't the 5th bow motor, it was the tonneau cover motor. I don't know what the symptoms of a 5th bow motor failure are, but the ratcheting sound seems more like the tonneau to me.

However, YOUR problem sounds similar to another that I've had, and it involved the microswitches in the convertible top bag in the trunk. In my case, the tab holding the microswitch on the left side of the bag (there are two) broke off on the outside and the switch got jostled around on the inside. So, since it was out of position, when the top would go up, the bag itself would pinch the switch and shut down the operation with "Check Soft Top" on the SID. I took the remainder of the plastic housing off the switch in the bag, and laid the switch aside where it couldn't be tripped again. I figure I can remember to lower the bag if I'm going to put the top down without the assistance of both switches (the right side one is still working fine anyway).

You should still check the 5th bow and tonneau motors, though. The dealer can tell you, based on VIN if the 5th bow was done. You have to examine the tonneau motor to see if the reinforcement kit was installed. If not, I wouldn't be surprised if it's failing too; as long as it's not too far gone, it can be repaired.

1995 Convertibles: high maintenance, but worth it.
