Remote - Security System

Went out the other night and locked my 97set with the remote, which arms the security system. When came back from the bar, (after a few pops) the battery in my remote was dead and would not open the door. I opened the door with the key which set the alarm off, and I could not disarm it. I had to have my wife bring me the second remote from home to get the car going. Is there away to disarm the security system with just the key if you used the remote to lock the car doors? Or should I be paying more attention to my remotes battery life?
TIA
Andrew
