When you turn the key, the solenoid on the starter moves the pinion gear into engagement with the ring gear on the starter. As it does this it then closes a high current contact to power the starting motor. The solenoid can be at fault, and can be replace or contacts cleaned up.
You can check that there is 12VDC at the solenoid terminal (a small one) when cranking. If there is no power, then fuses, relays etc.
If there is 12VDC to this terminal when the key is in the starting postition, then the solenoind or starter motor are at fault.
If you hear the solenoid engage, then it is working, but might not be making contact or the motor is bad. There will be other heavy cables, one goes directly to the battery and is unswitched. This presents a danger if you don't do things properly.
The big terminal closest to the start moter body is the switched high current. If the solenoid is working properly, this will go hot when the solenoid engages.
Happy wrenching!
