Besides quite a bunch of small improvements, it's much the same car. It's got redesigned struts, a hydraulic clutch, different bumpers, I think all 9-3s had dashboard cupholders, too. And probably a warranty left! The loss of the analog clock, though, is devastating (IMHO.)
The turbos are quite bulletproof, too, I think it's a matter of them being more sensitive to plugs/vac line leaks/general tune-up than anything else. You do have the DI cassette to worry about every 100K or so, but that's about it. Keep good oil in it, and the turbo takes care of itself. All the 9-3s are Turbos, in the states at least.
You might also consider a 98 900, it's got the hydraulic clutch (if you're into 5-speeds) and all the improvements made in the NG series, probably at a great price, given the resale values lately. Check out the 9-3 board, too.
