The NG900 (and 9-3, probably 9-5) temperture gauge is very different than your C900 temp gauge.
The older style temp gauges ran directly of a rersistive temperture sensor located in the engine cooling system, usually near the cylinder head. As the engine temperature changed, the resistance of the temp sensor changed, and the resulting voltage was shown on a corresponding temperature gauge as hot/cold or somewhere in between. Actually pretty useful as a tool to determine the functioning of your cooling system.
In many new cars, including the NG900, the gauges are actually run by a seoeature computer tha takes the inputs from the temperature sensor, wheel speed sensor, rpm sensor etc. and massages them per the instrument computers program. The program may say "Don't show any speed below 10MPH" or "Activate the low battery light at 11.5 volts". The NG900 temp gauge is prgrammed to show COLD at some temperature (say 100F for example) and HOT at some higher temperature (say 240F for example), and to show MIDDLE OF RANGE for a range of temperatures (say 160F to 190F for example). So the temp gauge in the NG900 is not proportional like the old temperature gauges. The new NG900 temp gauge is programmed to disply MIDDLE over a relatively wide range of temperatures.
And, BTW, my 1998 900SET under hood temperatures also seem hotter than my 1984 900T under hood temperatures did. I had a coolant leak on my 1998 900SET and I can tell you that the temperature gauge really skyrockets after it leaves the MIDDLE zone. I understand that the reason for programming the NG900 with such a wide range of temperatures at MIDDLE is because consumers were constanly complaining about the time their car took to warm-up or that the car runs a little hot in traffic. Your Saab dealer can program the temp gauge to be more sensitive by programming the start and stop temperatures for the MIDDLE position. I had mine done and it helps.
