Changing to synthetic oil...

A well maintained car with minimal engine oil leaks can be changed over to sythetic engine oil at any time. A problem engine with leaks and mysterious oil loss will probably only leak more with synthetic oil.

At 71,000 miles, changing to sythetic oil should be fine. Either use an engine oil flush, or use synthtic oil and change the first batch of synthetic after 1000 miles. This will git rid of any sludge or dino oil deposits that may have accumulated.

I use Mobil 1 10W-30 synthetic oil and change the oil and filter every 5,000 miles. I do mostly short distance, city driving. If you do mostly long distance highway driving, synthetic oil can be run for 10,000 miles between oil and filter changes. If you are going to invest in synthetic oil, it would be good to use either the Mobil 1 oil filter (http://www.mobil1.com) or the AC Delco Ultragard oil filter (ahttp://www.acdelco.com). Both have synthetic filter media for better filtering and longer filter life.
