If I just replace EVERY part, eventually...

I'll figure out where a front-end popping noise (also sounds sort of like a creaking) on my 1996 900se is coming from. Spent Saturday replacing strut inserts, strut mounts and thrust bearings, so it ain't that. Didn't think to pry up and down on the lower ball joint when I had the tire off but will certainly try it. Here's the symptoms, can someone here save me $$$$ I don't have by telling me what they think it sounds like?:
- groan-y thunk on hard acceleration/decleration coming from drivers side wheel well area.
- same noise while light braking/light deceleration over bumps.
- no noise while cruising over bumps.
Is an engine/tranny mount likely to cause this problem. I have already replaced the driver's side and eyeballed the passenger side and it looked fine. Haven't had a look at the rear engine mount yet.
If it is the ball joint, and I want to minimize the clunk without currently dropping $250-300 into a control arm is there something I can do to eliminate the noise (stiffer/thicker bushing, etc?)
Thanks for your help in restoring my sanity. Sort of. Maybe. OK, I'll be insane until the sound goes away. But then I'll be fine. Until the next part goes.
