They are MG IIIa's and the serial numbers show that they are the new editions (some call them IIIb's) so they have the same tweeter that the 3.3 - 3.6 have. With some DIY work and crossover upgrading I feel sure that I can get them up to the quality of the 3.5's. For the 3.6's they went to larger panels but still the same ribbon tweeters as the very late IIIa's. The tweeter ribbons are supposedly in good shape and the speakers have seen little use, but even if they are bad, new ones can be had from Magnepan for 98.00 a piece plus 24.00 shipping. It takes all of 15 minutes to replace the ribbons. I acutally called in the serial number to Magnepan and they said that nothing had ever been replaced.

They do have the magnetic protective strips, but not the original boxes that Magnepan ships them in. They had new boxes made for them and I am going to pick them up in my 9-3, so the handling won't be too harsh.

If I like the way they sound I will keep them and upgrade them and eventually trade them in on a set of 3.6's if I need to. If I don't like them, I can sell them for what I am paying for them. The Magnepan 3 series is supposedly one of the best values in audio today. Right now I am running a Krell integrated that produces 150 rms into 8 ohms and 300 rms into 4. I am not really happy with the Krell, but I should have enough power to run them until I can start looking for a new amp. I hear the Maggie's like amps that can produce 250 rms and up into 8 ohms. I will probably go NAD silver series or save some money buy going with acurus gear (maybe the RL11 and amp250).
Thanks for the help, you may get a few Maggie questions since it looks like we run not only the same kind of car, but the same speakers.
