ABS warning light--What to do?

So I was driving my 94 900S west along Lake of the Woods, taking the long way home to California, when the little exclamation point appeared on my dash. The antilock warning light chimes on, approximately fifteen seconds after I start my car. For some reason, the cruise control quit working at the same time.
Any ideas on what is wrong and what it may cost to fix? The disc brakes still seem fine, just the ABS unit may be messed up. And, can I have that little warning signal turned off without fixing the problem? A midwestern 94 Saab with over 160K and a coupla rust spots is getting to the point where an impoverished grad student in the humanities starts thinking about not fixing rear power windows and cruise control. ABS is nice, but cars stopped for decades without it.
Suggestions?
Thanks.
