Surfacing the flywheel is a normal thing to do. Unless the surface is really scored only a few thousandths of material need to be removed. Don't sweat the idea of reduced life, it's no biggie.
The reason I recommended it is that unless the flywheel is surfaced there is no guarantee that the surface is flat. If there are high spots then the new clutch will wear unevenly. Unfortunately, when they the clutch on my car, the service dept. didn't surface the flywheel. The clutch chattered before it was replaced and still chatters now.
