You folks are making me really nervous. I just bought a '97 900S 5spd w/ 54K miles on it, but for which I had no service history, whatsoever. But....I bought the car from a small Saab wholesaler in New Hampshire, knowing it had some problems getting into reverse. (The dealer and I both thought it was a shift linkage adjustment.) I had the car for about 30 minutes, and was actually on the way to the regular Saab dealer to pick up some floor mats....when...I couldn't get in to reverse at all--no matter what I did ! (lots of shifting, edging forward into 1st, etc.) I actually ending up pushing the car backwards, as I got my self stuck against a wall. I got the car back to the wholesaler, and his mechanics (at his expense!) ended up putting in a new reverse and R-synchro. Apparently, as they described the mess, a set screw had come loose on the collar that holds all the reverse stuff on the shaft. It ended up eating the R-synchro and that little bronze speed synch piece pretty badly.
Now, after reading all your discusion about '97 900S 5spds, I am worried that this wasn't a fluke, but a general quality problem with the '97...YIKES!! As it turns out, now my clutch is a little too high off the floor, and I'm having linkage adjustment problems again. (i've already tightened a bolt that them mechanic evidently forgot to torque down...) I really hope my problems are not as severe as what you all describe.
