REM mentions the service bulletin, which I think has been posted a few times. Really useful information. in a few VIN ranges, there were short-lived thermoswitches on the evap core and the compressor, allowing everything to freeze up. this is obviously bad for the compressor, and i don't think the evaporator core takes too kindly to being frozen in a block of ice.
also, the bulletin seems to blame many of the problems on the expansion valve, which controls the amount of 134a shuttled around the system. a dead one will also overtax the system but might take longer to completely kill it.
i think any of these problems can be diagnosed by an experienced hvac tech with the right gauges, there's nothing bizarre about the A/C design on these cars, i think it's a parts quality problem...it's a good thing to check periodically even if it's working.
