Hi,
I just bought a '95 900 SE Turbo, my first car, in what still seems to me - despite potentially a costly problem - a good deal. It had one owner, and 78,200 miles. The SRS light was lit, but I bought the car as is.
In order to pass the NY State inspection, I needed to scan the car, and upon dong so, the local Saab dealer has just informed me that the SRS module is broken, and needs to be replaced for the bargain price of ~ $1,100 (an estimated 2 hours of labor included.) I am completely unprepared to pay this amount of money immediately after buying the car (I've had it for a week,) and need to know my options.
I. Since I cannot pass the inspection with the light on, can I have it turned off temporarily, and then fix the problem at my earliest convenience? The dealer, understandably, will not do it. Still, I only have a few more days to pass the inspection.
II. How can I make sure that it is indeed the module that is broken, and not one of the sensors, or the ECM [?] codes? In other words, perhaps the service shop at the dealership is trying to sell me something I don't need. Service records show that an SRS light lit up three years ago; the problem was eliminated by entering a new code into the system. The technician at the dealership says that while the light is on, in the event of an accident, the airbags will not work.
III. If the module is really shot, can I buy an OEM module from one of the many parts stores that advertise on this site, and then have a private SAAB mechanic install it for me? In this case, the rate of labor isn't the issue, but the price of the part is, as is the ability of a private mechanic without a scanner, etc. to install it.
I love my new car, and would like to keep it running well. The light is not the only problem (the A/C doesn't blow cold air, a problem that I've already read up on in this forum; the dealership wants $225-$275 to do a dye check, but I'll tend to that later) but it is the most pressing one.
Thank you in advance for your advice,
Gennady
