On my 1998 900SET I have been using the Yokohama AVS S4-z "high performance all-season" tires for the past 35,000 miles. They have worked well in all conditions. As with any all-season tire, there are difinite trade-offs with the dry and wet handling to get some snow handling characteristics. But the tires have worked very well for me in this climate where we have a few inches of snow a couple times a year, and for the 3-4 trips a year over the mountain passes in the snow. Never needed my cable chains yet. On down side these tires have a lot of road noise.
I will need new tires this fall, and am planning to get the new Yokohama AVS dB, which replaced the AVS S4-z.
On thing to note. I found that I needed to go to a 205/55-16 tire size because the 205/50-16 stock tire size is hard to find in an all-season tire. The 205/55-16 tire size has worked fine, no rubbing (except a very small amount on the fuel tank vent tube in the right rear wheel well). The 205/55-16 tire size also provides a bit better protection for the rims from railroad tracks and potholes.
