Cone filter vs. cold air intake...depends on your application....

I believe this issue is really a bit overblown. It comes down how the vehicle will be used.
In theory a cone filter set-up should provide the least airflow restriction, especially at high RPM. Therefore, a cone filter located in the engine compartment can increase the available air for the intake system. The question becomes "What temperature is the air?". If the vehicle is used on a road racing course, or in a similar manner, then the cone filter will see cool air due to vehicle airflow. This will also be true if the vehicle is dyno-tuned, as the engine hood is open and there are typically a couple large fans blowing air at the front of the vehicle.
If the vehicle is use around town in urban/suburban driving situations, then any filter drawing air from the engine compartment will be sucking engine heated 'hot' air. For this application a cold air intake should increase the available power due to the lower intake air temperature (and theoretically higher air density). Reducing any air intake restrictions (like modifying the airbox with a larger intake tube or a funnel intake tube) over the stock air intake system while maintaining a cold air intake will produce additional benefits.
So there is no one right answer. The choice of a cone filter set-up vs. a ‘cold air’ intake will depend on how you plan to use the vehicle.
