Is the whirring sound something I could live with or will it drive me nutz over time?

I think you can live with it. I dont mind it anymore.

Did you put the rotors on yourself? If so any tips?

It is very easy to do. Have a set of allen bit set. OR regular allen wrenchs will do. Just make sure after you pull the two allen wrenches from the calipers, hang the calipers to there is no pressure on the brake line. Then unscrew the hex screw on the rotor and take it out. It is sooo easy. You dont need to bleed the brakes. Just dont press the brake at any time during the installation. Spray brake parts cleaner on the rotors to take off the film on it then put them on.
