According to Haynes, there is a hair spring to carry electrical signals. That could be the problem, if there is a foreign object in there, or is is distorted.
If the wheels are not straight, when you refit the wheel assy, the spring can be mis-indexed to the shaft splines. It looks like a fairly simple job.
With the Haynes manual, it looks like a DIY.
Could a fragment of paper gotten in there?
