Speedometer acts strangely (long)

OK electrical gurus, here's one for you:
1997 900se
Occasionally my speedometer cuts out to zero. It may stay there for awhile, or sometimes it shakes back and forth between zero and my true speed. This is worse in the wintertime, perhaps because of wet weather?
When this happens in the winter, the ABS light comes on for about 2 seconds, followed by the red Warning (!) light coming on as well, then I hear the chime, and then it all just goes away. Except it did it on the highway today as well. The warning lights seem to come on every time I apply the brakes for extended time, but they always disappear within 6 or 7 seconds.
This may be wishful thinking/coincidence , but when I go through the carwash my broken speedo usually fixes itself again! This problem occurs every few months in warm weather and more often in winter. Hitting the dash does not help.
What's the answer, UFO interference?
