I have seen where a number of anit lock brake systems have specfically recommended agaist silicone brake fluids.
From what I know, all brake fluid is synthetic, as it is not distilled from any naturally occuring feed stock. Brake fluids are not petroleum based. Common brake fluids are chemically related to ethers (sp?) and are are soluable in water and visa versa.
Silicon brake fluids do not disolve any water that gets into the system, and the water can remain in bulk form and cause much more rust in the long run.
Worry about water. The Saab and most euro brake systems use reservoirs that vent to and breath to the atmosphere, which is really stupid. A bladder could be used, as with US makes, to separate the fluid from the air. You should remove and replace the fluid in the reservoir every year if you do not do a brake bleed that year, and if you do a brake bleed, replace the fluid in the reservior first, as to not pump the most contaminated fliud throught the rest of the system. Moisture only gets in at the reservoir.
