I have used Monroe Sensa-Tracs on other cars and have liked them a lot. You can't beat them for the money.
I would say that the "regular" Monroes are not worth the effort. They are only marginally less expensive and a lot worse.
Sensa-Tracs are really good, in my experience. They improve the ride tremendously, while also improving handiling quite a bit. If you don't believe me -- go to a Nissan dealer and try a 2000.5 and later Altima. They come with Sensa-Tracs from the factory. I bet you will be very impressed.
The OEM struts are ACDelco (at least on some models.) They are not that expensive too. Unless bought from a SAAB dealer :-). I would prefer Monroes over them, though.
Of course, if you want the ultime ride/handling compromise -- go with KONIs. They will also last forever, especially if you go easy on stiffness adjustments.
For ultimate handling use Bilstein Sport. They are very harsh, though. They make the most difference above 100 mph. I use them on my classic 900 with factory roadholding kit. You can flic it into a 100 mph sweeper -- and it just holds the line, smooth as butter. Awesome!
