I replaced the one on my 95 900S last spring for the same reason. Seems that the glue that holds the cover to the plastic mount fails after time. You could probably squirt some glue up there to fix the problem. My plastic cover was torn so I decided to go for new. Plus the leather one from the SAAB Catalog (at the dealer) was almost the same price as my basic one!
I would guess that the plastic core of all the knobs are the same.
As far as I know the only way to remove the old one is to cut it off. The tech. at the dealer said that's what they did. You then just push the new one down on the splined shaft of the shift lever (make sure it's properly aligned, you won't get to change it!). You need to 'whack' it down pretty good, if you don't the reverse lock-out mechanism doesn't work properly. I used a rubber mallett to fully seat it. You might note where the reverse lock is on the shift lever before you remove the old knob so you can put the new one on at the same level. OTOH, if you pull the shift boot you will be able to see when the new know is fully seated.
Bottom line is that it wasn't too difficult and once I got over trashing the old knob it went fine.
