What you describe is basic to the beast. It follows ruts etc.

I was finding that my steering was getting very rubbery, and the connection between the steering wheel and the front wheels seemed rubbery, or blubbery :) Like fighting with a snake.

When the vehicle is following ruts or doing the torque steer thing, having the rubbery situation makes things a bit crazy.

Jack up one road wheel at a time, and grab the elevated one and twist it. The far wheel on the ground will resist. Determine if there is play in the tie rod end just behind the tire. This could get your shirt dirty. An assistant might be a good idea. See in anything else seems bogus.

Testing the ball joint and the strut top is not so easy. My strut top and tie rods seem fine at 128000 miles.

I was not determined to find out what was going on, so I did the whole kit. So I cannot help much at the level of detail that you are seeking. but the dealer should be able to sort these things out.

"Rubber bands steering the car." I think that we are talking about the same thing. Price the dealer recommended OEM parts installed against the installed VRK components. Then the price is not so scarey, but still painful.
