No, the engines do not self-destruct at 50k. They do need regular cam-belt changes, but otherwise are decent engines. This is a hot topic, though. I believe there are several people with V6's on this board with around 100k on them (the cars, not the people).
Of course, no Saab is a mantenance-free proposition. If you don't like the car, then sure, get rid of it, but don't bail just because you've heard bad things.
Volvo, eh? I have a good friend who has four 240 wagons between he, his wife and his two kids. It's kind of funny to see his driveway full of identical rectangular cars.
