has anyone had any internal tranny work done? Posted by MJM [Email] ![]() ![]() |
Several weeks ago my 3rd gear started crunching on up or down shifts. All the other gears are fine. My dealers service dept. agreed that the synchro is probably bad and they mentioned some bearing noise also (which I can't hear). The problem is that they don't have the equipment to work in the internals. A call to another dealer got me pretty much the same story; they don't like to work on them and prefer going the remanufactured route. I've called every repair place in the phone book here that mentions transmission work and they all said that they don't do Saabs.
The "problem" is that while my extended warranty company is willing to repair the tranny (guestimated at around $1000), they are understandably reluctant to authorize a reman unit at $2000. Since I wasn't able to find a shop that did Saab tranny rebuilds, the ext. warr. co. suggested I call AAMCO, the nearest one is about an hour away.
I called the AAMCO shop and asked if they did Saab manual transmissions and when they called me back like a half an hour later, the answer was "sure, we've done a couple of those, no problem'. "Still", I'm skeptical.
Does anyone have any experience with this chain? How about recomendations for good Saab tranny repair in Central PA? I don't like the idea of an AAMCO working on my car, but I don't really want to shell out $1000+ to get a reman unit.
I had wanted to put this work off until after I get through my candidacy exams this week, but the warr. co. gave me a really hard time about continuing to drive the car with a known defect. I can understand their point, but this solution doesn't feel too good.
thanks for any input,
Mike
