the combo of tread design and compound will do the most to change the handling of the car. The smaller wheel might actually make things more comfortable. The narrower tread (I have 185/65 15 tires) will not make a difference in winter driving conditions, actually the idea is the narrower tires cuts through the crap better. They must be right because the World Rally Cars use 185 width tires for snow events (mud too, I think)!
The rubber compound and tread design make for a really sluggish feel when the roads are dry (yokohama Guardex tires). I kind of feel like I'm on a slinky, or maybe a caddy, when changing lanes. When the roads suck, the tires are great. You just keep truckin' along at a safe speed.
I did have problems with corrosion between the hub and steel wheels. I suppose I will put on LOTS of anti-seize when it comes time to switch wheels.
