They will be soft until you pump the pads up against the rotors.
If you push the pistons in while bleeding, then close the bleed valve and then pump the pistons up against the old pads, then repeat until clear, you will be changing the fluid in the caplipers, not just the lines. Be sure that there are pads when you pump, or you will push the pistons out of the calipers. No this is not a standard method. But think about it...
Also remove the fluid at the reservior and add new fluid before starting, as that fluid is the most contaminated, and you don't want to send it through the system.
