weird noise - while the engine is shut off!

this one is really mystifying me. when the engine is shut off - even for hours - there's a constant grinding/humming noise that's coming from the front left of my 96 900se. it seems to be centered in the general area behind my left headlight, but i can't figure out what it is. it's quite loud when i lift the hood, and the body panels even vibrate to it when i put my hand on them. is this the location of the horn? could it be that?
worried that whatever it is, it could be draining my battery. though the car started fine today.
thanks. s.
