As a matter of preventive maintenance I recently put external tooth washers, also known as 'star' washers, on the wiring ground points of my 1998 900SET. So far I have found three wiring ground points, two are located in the left front corner of the engine compartment next to the washer fluid filler neck, and one is located in the left rear corner of the hatch/trunk for grounding the tail lights. I am sure there are more, I just haven't come across them yet.

The ground studs I have found so far are all 6mm thread with a 10mm (across the flats) nut. I bought a dozen 1/4" external tooth washers at the local hardware store for about $0.13USD each. The 1/4" external tooth 'star' washers fit the 6mm ground stud perfectly. External tooth 'star' washers are commonly used in electronics to ensure a good ground connection. The sharp teeth on the 'star' washers bite into the ground stud and the wire ring terminals, making sure there is good metal to metal contact.

When I locate such a wiring ground point, I remove the nut and wires from the gounding stud. Then I clean stud and the wire terminal rings with steel wool. Finally I place a 'star' washer over the ground stud, then the wire terminal rings, followed by another 'star' washer, and finally the nut. Then tighten the nut securely.

Knowing that your ground connections are clean and tight helps eliminate one source of problems. Ensuring the best possible ground contacts, especially with the computers and sophsticated electronics of modern cars, is imperative to good vehicle operation.
