I have fixed my volume knob on my Clarion head unit in my 94 900s. I would rate this a 2 out of 5 on technical difficulty, so give it a try if your volume refuses to be controled.

Step one: Make sure you are in possession of our radio code.
Step two: Using removal tool (cheap at Wally-world) pull your radio from the dash, disconnect the cables and repair to your favorite work bench or kitchen table.
Step three: Remove the screws (put them someplace safe) from the top cover of the unit, they reside on the side. Remove the top cover.
Step four: Gently remove the face plate. This requires the use of fingernails and gentle pressure to the plastic clips holding it in place.
Step five: Pull the volume knob off. Then using a pair of needle nose pliers turn the retaining nut (down in the hole behind the knob) counter clockwise, until it comes off.
Step six: Now the volume unit should be easily removed from the behind the plate.
Step seven: Twist the knob back and forth and click it (like you were pushing it to turn it off and on) many, many times, to be sure there is no build up (especailly for you smokers) in the reostat.
Step eight: Replace the volume unit; making sure the connections properly seat.
Step nine: While holding the volume unit replace the retaining nut. DO NOT over tighten. The knob should push in and snap back with ease.
Step ten: Replace face plate and top cover (now where did I put those screws).
Step eleven: Take the radio back out to the car, reconnect the wires, gently reinsert the radio into its housing. Turn on the car, enter the code and see what happens.

I have done this twice. The only reason I had to do it the second time was because I did the amp and sub upgrade and pulled the head unit a couple of time, which upset the tension on the retainig nut and the connection went bad again. The only real reason to do the clicky thing is just to make sure the reostat is clean. I haven't had any problems since the last time I did this procedure. I also avoid turning the radio on and off, I just use my volume knob to turn it down. This whole problem is casaused by a mechanical design flaw which leads to an electrical problem.
