We don't know why the pump failed. Did it's wear surfaces lock up, or did some trash get into it as a result of a failure elsewhere, or did something get loose downstream and create a blockage which overloaded the pump?

So why not rebuild. Can these engines be bored out? Even if a main bearing spins a good shop can build it and the cap back up and line bore it. The cylinder bores usually are not that bad. Hot pistons create a tight fit. When thing are cold they will move with a block of wood and a heavy hammer.

No I did not run out of oil, I purchased a Volvo wagon with a known siezed engine and I tore it down and had the block bored and preped. That Volvo was a great purchase at $350! My inlaws had a ford V8 where the valve seals turned hard and became little bits that plogged the oil intake screen until it buckled it and the junk locked the gear pump. The hex drive shaft for the pump twisted off. Rebuilt that. Just replaced the hex shaft and bearings and rings for good measure. Did not remove the block, rebuilt in in place. Dad had a marine engine where water from the exhaust system over the winter rusted things up. No loss of oil pressure, but things needed some banging and new rings and bearings while in their. You engine failed in city traffic I assume. The damage may be quite minimal.

Had a major drop in oil pressure on a opel GT in severely cold weather. The oil pressure relief spring had buckled and jambed open in a cold start. I fould that after working under the engine measuring bearing gaps in a very cold dark garage. You see, the pump is not always at fault.
