Turbo lag at altitude - can I do anything about it?

Hello -
I have a '97 900 SE Turbo with Auto transmission. I bought the car in Oregon (sea level), and 4 years later have moved to Colorado. What was once a minor annoyance is now downright dangerous - the turbo lag from a stop is horrible! Especially if the AC is on, you have to make sure you have a good loooooooong space to get out on the highway from a stop at an intersection. Once the turbo kicks in (around 20MPH) things are fine, but it can take a good 5 seconds to get to 20MPH!
My question is, is there anything that can be done about it? Is it likely there is something broken? Are there any adjustments to be made? My understanding is that the car's computer is supposed to compensate for altitude. Are there any aftermarket upgrades that might help?
The car is in fine shape, I've had it since new and it has always been well maintained, always used premium fuel and synthetic oil. I've been in Colorado for a year, but have noticed no changes since I moved here.
Thanks for your suggestions,
Pete
