I did it as a way to diagnose a bad throwout bearing, and it ended up having other results. I don't think it's bad unless you flood the bell housing with lube. You can't really see the clutch mating surfaces from the inspection port, only the throwout side of the assembly, so you're not really in danger of soaking the plates by accident. Most anything you spray in will run out the bottom or get flung off when you drive it.
I agree with Dean, there's not going to be an easy way to permanently grease it. A lot of people have reported that a new clutch feels great for a few thousand miles, then it gets hard again; I think this is because even the moly grease they use on the splines wears off. With a shot of WD-40, it's like silk. For a very, very short time. But it should help to clean out any crud accumulated there, which I think causes the rock-hard/binding pedal feel. (A bad clutch/cable can also cause this, of course...) It'll go back to being harder, but in may case, it relieved the really impossible effort and 'binding' feeling.
