Good, I hope your trans is ok!
It is possible that that scenario might result in a broken gear, but I'd doubt it. Picture the tire sitting on the road. In order for the tire to rotate and move forward it has to "push off" from the road surface, just like a sprinter coming out of the blocks. The friction between the road surface and the tire is what balances/resists that force and allows the tire to roll forward. If the tire pushes back on the road with a force greater than the friction force available, the tire will just spin. This act of "lighting the tires up", or "burning out" is something that lots of people do, and generally doesn't damage the cars trans., although clutches do suffer. Anyway, back to the illustration, in what I described, we were looking at the tire applying force to the road and rotating, but the same forces are at work when the road tries to turn the tire. From a force standpoint, it doesn't matter whether the tire is moving and the road is stationary, or the tire is stationary (locked) and the road is moving.
Does that help a bit? I'm dying for a blackboard and a piece of chalk; I'm afraid that my word pictures aren't good enough. I'm also not trying to be patronising, so if you already knew this then forgive me.
