Cleaning cabin ventilation filter: no-brainer (like me) job..

Getting to the filter took me 15-20 mins. The only parts that needed to be unscrewed are the two wiper arms (13mm nut). Second step was disconnecting the windshield washer tubing on the driver’s side. Then it was matter of carefully removing the black plastic cover and then a second smaller plastic cover that protects the filter from direct rain water. Both are held in place without screws. After that, the filter is exposed. “Unlatch” the filter, slide it sideways towards the passenger’s side and remove it carefully. At this point, remove (by pulling gently) and clean the 10-15 inch rubber drain pipe, that invariably will be plugged with leaves.
Cleaning the filter, the lengthy part: This can be done in the kitchen sink with some laundry detergent. It will be matter of holding it by the two side “latches” and while submerged in soapy water shaking it up and down, up and down. This will force the water thru the cleaning element removing carbon dust and dirt. I think I did 5 to 10 of these cycles, of 5 min each (changing the water every time). When the filter looks reasonably clean, rinse off the soap and leave it submerged in water/bleach (yes, bleach, at least 10% final concentration) for half hour or so. This will kill off bacteria/molds living in your filter. Rinse again, let dry and replace.
