Hi.
I had the same difficulty. My thermostat was faulty, preventing the engine reaching operating temperature (yes, thermostats play as much a part in reaching operating temperature as they do in preventing overheating).
If you turn your car off when the light is on and then turn the key back to position II (lights on, dash lights on, etc. but engine OFF) the check engine light will flash a pattern. The pattern decodes into a diagnostic telling you what the problem really is. Mine said coolant temperature out of range. Couple that with poor heat from the heater and it indicated that the engine wasn't getting hot enough and therefore didn't burn fuel correctly.
I don't have the pattern handy, but if I trip across the chart I'll tell you where it is.
